Overview

Transporting cryogenic liquefied natural gas by sea is a specialty that requires advanced marine transportation management expertise. Having secured its first LNG ship in 1994, SK Shipping is now operating a controlled fleet of 12 ships, which makes it the largest LNG shipping company in Korea. SK Shipping is also a global LNG shipping company that is the first in the world to gain experience at operating four types of cargo containment systems including moss, membrane (Mark III, NO96-GT) and KC-1 (Korean LNG cargo hold).

SK Shipping began transporting LNG when it acquired YK Sovereign in 1994. In 1996, 1997 and 2001 the company concluded long-term transportation contracts for five carriers with Korea Gas Corporation, and thus grew into a national LNG carrier company.

 

In 2013, based on its experience, SK Shipping, as the premier LNG carrier in Korea, won a long-term shale gas transportation contract from Total of France for which it secured two additional 180,000CBM level LNG carriers thus becoming an LNG carrier of global standards. From year 2014 to 2019, SK Shipping additionally won a long-term transportation contracts from Korea Gas Corporation and SK E&S, which secured two and three LNG carriers respectively.

 

Over the past 20 years SK Shipping has carried out more than 1,100 voyages. Now, based on its top-level LNG operational expertise and ship management capacity, SK Shipping is growing into a top-tier global LNG shipping company.
